Chief of the Valley Police District (Inspector Clark) has issued ten traffic control men with special white gauntlets trimmed with luminous tape. The tape is designed to glow brilliantly in the light from ear headlamps. Inspector Clark said the gauntlets would make traffic control safer for police. "Motorists will be able to see them more clearly and follow their directions more easily," he said. They are from left: Constable W. E. (Bill) Eaton (31), Constable C. H. (Clarrie) Eaton (21), Detective T. E. (Tom) Eaton (33), Constable O. H. (Bert) Eaton (23) and Constable J. J. (Jack) Eaton (27), Tom joined the force in 1939; was in CIB work during the war. Jack (A POW for 3 years), Bill and Bert also saw service and Clarrie was in the ATC when the war finished. The two younger brothers joined on the same day, went through the police school together and graduated on the same day. August 17, 1949.

A guards sergeant held one end of a length of string outside Westminster Abbey yesterday. Another soldier held the other end. And that was the crowd problem over. The string represented the line of troops up to which cheering people will be allowed when the Queen leaves the Coronation coach on June 2. It was the second Sunday morning rehearsal of the Coronation procession. A State landau, with its blinds down, left Buckingham Palace at 8 o'clock and stopped at the entrance to Westminster Abbey at 8.33. Bowler-hatted officials from the Ministry of Works paced solemnly with the police beside the landau, which was drawn by Windsor greys. Rowswell, of Grays Inn Road Police Station, was shot through the eye when leading a chase over the roof of five-storey hotel in Cartwright Gardens (near Grays Inn Road, London) today, Friday. The pursuit started when police making inquiries about the fatal shooting of Aleysius Abbott, Jamaican aircraftman, outside the Esther Cafe, New Cavendish Street, on Christmas morning, sighted a man they wished to interview. Tests are being made at Hendon, London, N.W., to discover the best type of siren for warning the public in the event of a gas attack from the air. This morning a number of selected sirens were sounded from Hendon police station. A ring of police observers was stationed in pairs at distances of 100, 200, 300 and 400 yards with sound-recording instruments to determine the power and penetration of the different siren notes over variousd distances. A new style uniform for policewomen will be issued sometime in November. Police used tear gas Tuesday night to disperse rioting demonstrators who smashed windows of the British council building at Nicosia, Cyprus, and tried to set fire to the Building. A typical unit is this one made up of a white officer, a native constable and a pack camel. Note that only the white man carries a gun.
