Carrier 'Vengeance' Out of Home. Fleet Exercise - Firefly and Sea Fury aircraft line the deck of the 13,190 tons light fleet carrier HMS 'Vengeance' as it proceeded to Gibraltar for home fleet exercises, September, 1950. It was revealed on Sept. 14 that sand had been discovered in the filter arrangement of the lubricating system supplying the carrier's main machinery when she was at portsmouth. While the investigation into the incident was continuing, a second was reported after she had put into plymouth. This concerned a mis-adjustment of a main valve. An Admiralty spokesman referred evening Sept. 21 to a report that the aircraft carrier Vengeance had been taken Gibraltar Sept. 18 because of engine defect. September 22, 1950. World's largest tanker arrives in the Thames - A general view of the "Tina Onassis" at her berth at Purfleet, Essex.The 43,000 ton tanker "Tina Onassis" has arrived in the Thames and is berthed at Purfleet, Essex. Over 750ft. Long, she is the largest tanker in the world and is named after the daughter of a Greek shipowner. The ship, which was built in Germany, has brought a cargo of oil from the Persian Gulf and is now on loan to a British oil Company. The "Tina Onassis", which took 15 months to build, is also the largest vessel over to come up the Thames - the previous largest being the "Dominion Monarch" - 27,000 tons. January  11, 1954.

Here's A Harbour Headache -- The Olympic Splendour may be the pride and joy of millionaire shipowner Aristotle Onassis, but to Fremantle Harbour authorities it's just a headache. The whaling tanker, on its maiden voyage, is so modern, so big, that they can't berth it without disrupting other ships. So the Olympic Splendour to day was bustled out to Gage Roads by FHT tugs. There hull until March 7. The big tanker is carrying £1,500,000 worth of whale oil. with other ships of the Onassis fleet, it was recently chased ignominiously from Peruvian waters. March 8, 1955.

Really a mine lamp -- BOAC Hostess Joan Henderson with the lamp. The brass and pewter Olympic "air" torch for the 1956 Games in Melbourne arrived today by BOAC Constellation.  The torch was transferred to a TAA plane for Melbourne. It was presented by the Olympic Committee of the Saar, in Germany.The torch is actually a German miner's safety lamp.It is about 11 inches high, weighs 41b and can be carried safely in an aircraft cabin.The lamp will be used to kindle the runners' torch in Cairns in 1956. Australian Olympic Federation chairman Harry Alderson said, "The lamp which has, until now, been in use in Saar mines, is a gift to the federation and has been sent here for inspection.
