250,000 At Voortrekker Monument -- This was the scene early in the morning of December 16 as thousands of South Africans gathered in the ampitheatre of the Voortrekker Monument, Pretoria, South Africa, for the inauguration of the Monument. About 250,000 people, a tenth of the white population of South Africa, took part in the ceremony. Dr. Daniel Malan, Premier, said that South Africans must struggle to maintain the ideas and spirit of the Voortrekkers. General Jan Smuts said they must solve the problem of relations with the native people. December 20, 1949. (Photo by Associated Press Photo).
